Welcome to Year 11 Mathematical Methods

Year 11 Mathematical Methods is a significant step up from Year 10 mathematics and is often a student’s first real introduction to the style of maths they will encounter throughout SACE Stage 1 and Stage 2. The subject places a much greater emphasis on algebraic reasoning, functions, graphs and multi-step problem solving, so building strong foundations early is incredibly important.

This Catalyst Academics course is designed specifically for South Australian students and closely follows the structure and progression of the Haese Mathematics textbook commonly used in schools. We begin by exploring relationships between variables before moving into quadratics, functions, polynomials and trigonometry. Students then develop their understanding of counting, probability, sequences and statistics, before progressing into surds, indices, exponentials and logarithms. The course finishes with an introduction to differential calculus, including the meaning of a derivative and how derivatives can be used to analyse and solve real mathematical problems.

Throughout the year, students are expected to move beyond simply applying memorised formulas. They will need to interpret unfamiliar questions, connect ideas from different topics, communicate their reasoning clearly and choose suitable methods without always being told exactly what to do. These skills become increasingly important as students prepare for Year 12 Mathematical Methods.

Students will also complete a range of school assessments across the two semesters. This commonly includes six Skills and Applications Tasks, two mathematical investigations and two examinations, with three tests, one investigation and one exam completed in each semester. Our course is designed to support students across each of these assessment styles, whether they are revising for a topic test, developing the reasoning needed for an investigation or preparing to bring several chapters together in an exam.

Mathematical Methods is an important prerequisite or recommended subject for many future pathways, including engineering, computer science, data science, economics, commerce, finance and the health sciences. Even for students who are still unsure about their future direction, it is an excellent subject for keeping options open while developing valuable analytical and problem-solving skills.
